Due out on May 28th we get the 1st pack designed for sealed pack play. the set has 220 cards made up of 55 rare and 165 common. the set includes re-prints of stuff like tour guide, utopia, monarch's.

This sequel to 2010's Legendary Collection is the biggest value in Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG history! Each box contains a mix of fixed and random content totalling 58 cards, including 28 foil cards. When a monster declares an attack, you can remove 1 Exceed material monster from this card to negate the attack. When this card is selected as an attack target while it has no Exceed Material Monsters, destroy it.

A good card for gadgets is the obvious use for this card.

A bit of poker theory to help y'all out

This is a pretty strange article so bear with it, since it will be useful to players of virtually all skill levels. What I'm going to do here is identify the different types of players you are likely to encounter at tournaments using an identification system developed by poker legend Phil Hellmuth, Jr. and how to play against each one. As such all credit goes to Phil for this since I've basically just taken his theory and applied it to Yu Gi Oh.

There are 5 different types of player you're likely to encounter during a tournament, which will be referred to as 5 different animals: the jackal, elephant, mouse, lion and eagle.

The Jackal

By far the weakest player you're likely to encounter is the jackal. He knows his deck and what it's supposed to do, and that is exactly what he will do every game without thinking or taking any risks into account. The jackal is the kind of player who will play a deck like X-Sabers or Samurai and drop his whole hand into 3 back rows without a moment's thought, or play a grinder deck like plants and just try to aggro you with Scrap Dragon as soon as the opportunity presents itself. These kind of players are easily beaten by a well timed Torrential Tribute/Book of Moon. If you can survive against a jackal's badly timed aggressive plays, cards like Dark Hole will generally win you the game. Jackals can be beaten easily by playing conservatively and timing your cards well, but if you don't have outs to their awful plays, you may find yourself getting luck sacked.

The Elephant

This guy is pretty bad, but can be frustrating to play against because he will win games because of technically bad plays that randomly pay off. The elephant is a lot less erratic than the jackal, but is similarly impossible to bluff. He will convince himself that your set card isn't TT or Mirror force and steadily summon monsters every turn. The elephant is not making a read here, he just never believes you have the card that will beat him and when you don't, you will end up taking a lot more damage than you should. The best way to beat an elephant is to hold your power cards (Mirror Force, Dark Hole, Gorz etc) until you can get a game changing amount of advantage from them. Sometimes the elephant will beat you just because he's impossible to scare and you're unable to stop his plays.

The Mouse

The mouse is a pretty solid player, but not the best because he thinks about the game too mathematically. The mouse is extremely conservative and he fears your power cards a bit too much. Never expect to get more than a 1 for 1 out of Torrential Tribute, Dark Hole or Mirror Force against a mouse, because he simply won't commit multiple monsters to the board. The mouse will generally do quite well at tournaments because he is a consistent and safe player, but he will lose games to playing too tight and not getting enough damage done when he should. The best way to play against a mouse is bluff him into a corner and grind him down/explode for the win while he is too afraid to act.

The Lion

The lion is a very solid player who understands the game very well. He is conservative, similar to a mouse and hard to squeeze card advantage out of, but unlike the mouse, the lion makes good reads, takes calculated risks and plays around the cards that will hurt him most, making him all round a stronger competitor. The lion can be difficult to bluff but he's not an idiot and won't walk into your sets unless he has a very good reason to. Playing against a lion can be very tough because he will make the right play more often than not. Bluff the lion when you need to because he's smart enough to be cautious but don't show him you're weak because unlike a mouse he will capitalise on it.

The Eagle

The eagle is the toughest competitor. He plays like the lion but more refined. He can make calculated reads based on minimal information and always seems to come out on top in card trades. He knows how to extend himself at the perfect time and seems to always have the right card for the situation - this is not because he's a cheat but because he holds his cards until the perfect moment. The eagle can identify what kind of player his opponent is in the first few turns and pick them apart from there. Playing against an eagle is tough because he will make good reads and good bluffs alike and is likely to come out ahead in a grind. Play sensibly, try your best and most importantly learn everything you can while you face one of these players.

The Card Advantage Theory

In this article I'm going to explain a little bit about "Card Advantage," why it's important, but also why it won't win you games by itself.

Having card advantage over your opponent refers to having more cards at your disposal than they do. Card advantage can be calculated by adding together the number of cards you control on the field to the number of cards in your hand (also adding any indirect advantage such as a Malicious in the graveyard or a card that has been removed from play by Gold Sarcophagus). Say, for example you control a face-up Thunder King Rai-Oh and 2 set spell or trap cards, with 3 cards in hand (for a total of 6 cards) and your opponent controls 2 face-up Gravekeeper's Spies, 3 set spell or trap cards, a Necrovalley and has 1 card in hand (for a total of 7 cards) your opponent is considered to have card advantage over you (while many players think card advantage refers only to cards in your hand, this is not the case).

Card advantage is an important part of winning a duel, because the more cards you have, the more options are open to you; and the more options you have, the greater your chances are of inflicting 8000 damage to your opponent's life points and winning the duel. A common (albeit oldschool) way to win is to make a couple of good card trades, getting yourself a card or 2 ahead of your opponent, then using one-for-one destruction to simplify the game (simplifying the game means trading your cards for theirs at a 1:1 rate, meaning there are less cards in play overall for both players) down to a point where you control 2-3 cards to your opponent's 0-1. This puts you in a strong position as you will likely have board presence over your opponent and a card in hand to back it up, while they are relying on top-decks to get out of the situation.

Card advantage is a great theory for new players to learn, as concentrating on having more cards than your opponent will turn you into a better player quickly, and increase your win rate considerably. Surefire ways newer players can lose games to getting out-advantaged are things such as normal summoning a monster every turn irrespective of what's going on in the duel and walking 3 monsters into Torrential Tribute, or dropping a Sirocco and 2 Boras for game only to donk into a set Mirror Force. These blunders put your opponent 2 cards ahead of you immediately and clear your board of monsters (though that is a discussion for another topic), which gives them a very easy time simplifying the game down to the stage where you have no cards and they are in control. Another common mistake newbies make is Synchro summoning on a whim simply because there is a possibility for them to do so. This is often a bad idea as investing a lot of cards into making a Stardust Dragon and walking into a Dimensional Prison can be devastating to your card count.

I also want to take this opportunity to explain how card advantage cannot win games by itself. Card advantage is a means to getting more options than your opponent, but it is the options themselves that win the games. Since the release of Invasion of Chaos many, many years ago, Yu Gi Oh has slowly but steadily drifted away from an advantage game and into a game of dropping a **** ton of big monsters and swinging for game in one turn. Card advantage obviously helps you out here AND IS STILL EXTREMELY IMPORTANT, but these days versatility, timing and board presence are becoming more and more important to winning the game. Let me compare some cards to show what I mean.

Foolish Burial vs Green Gadget

Foolish Burial is an inherent -1 (meaning you give it up from your hand and don't directly gain another card out of it or destroy an opponent's card), while Green Gadget is an inherent +1 (meaning as soon as it is summoned you gain another card immediately). Gadgets had their time of being unbelievably potent in days of old when card advantage was everything and you could simply drop Gadget after Gadget backed up with Sakuretsu Armours and Smashing Grounds, however in today's metagame there are simply faster, more effective ways to win. Nowadays the option of losing a card from your hand to send any monster from your deck to the graveyard is far more useful than summoning one monster and getting another for free, because of all the combos that now revolve around monsters in the graveyard and monsters that have beneficial effects when sent to/while in the graveyard. Even if you do boil it down to raw card advantage, the plays that can be set up by Foolish Burial often lead to a much greater + than summoning a Gadget.

Remember that if you can make a play that will get you card advantage over your opponent, it is probably a good idea, however there are some circumstances where this is not the case. For example wasting a power card like Monster Reborn to gain a simple +1 or giving up half your life and blowing your Solemn to stop a card that isn't going to compromise you massively just so that you can get some more +.

An example of the above situation would be a Pharaoh's Elite final I played VS Lewis Palmer in which he flipped a Mirror Force on my Shura. I wanted to force the attack through so that I could get my +1 off of Shura's effect and played my Solemn Judgment. This netted me a Magical Android and a Vayu in grave (indirict +1), but at the cost of half my life AND my Solemn, it clearly wasn't worth it, seeing as I lost the duel to Smashing Ground, Fortress, Limiter on the following turn.

While this article may seem to lean in the other direction, I am a strong advocate of the card advantage theory and believe that keeping to it as much as possible is the best way to win games, however I cannot stress enough in this format of whacky combos and Synchro locks the importance of card relevance over card advantage. I will explain this by giving you a situation that I saw come up a lot at UKPC2 in Zombie vs Lightsworn games:

The game has ground on for a while and both players have their full 8000 life. The Zombie player is able to make a strong advantage push, leaving his opponent topping, while having 4 or 5 cards in hand. The Lightsworn player would topdeck a Judgment Dragon and clear the field before attacking for 3000. More often than not, in the Zombie player's 6 card hand there was not a single out to JD other than possibly making a Brionac (only a temporary solution and no good when your opponent is on full life with a Necro Gardna or 2 in the grave). When put in this situation the Zombie player basically had 2 turns to top an out to the JD (which pretty much had to be Caius with revival in hand, the ability to make Brionac with a Bottomless behind it or set Mirror Force and protect it with Stardust) or he would lose.

The above scenario shows that sometimes, no matter how much card advantage you hold over your opponent, if you can't play around their board, all that advantage is meaningless. This is the case because cards simply aren't as all purpose as they once were, as everything revolves around combos nowadays (meaning more reward for putting the pieces together, but issues with dead cards in hand).

Anyway that just about concludes this article, hopefully this has helped some people learn the importance of card advantage and when to/when not to whore it to a crazy extent. Feel free to discuss and share your opinions/questions.

Structure Deck: Dragunity Legion is the eighteenth Structure Deck to be released into the TCG. It is the TCG version of Structure Deck 19: Dragunity Drive. It adds support to the Dragunity Archetype which is new to the TCG.

this also introduces the dragunity arma sub-archtype.
